Optimism is a strategy for making a better future. Because unless you believe that the future can be better, it's unlikely you will step up and take responsibility for making it so.
- Noam Chomsky
The making of art, of anything creative, indeed the very act of making, of doing, is an act of optimism. A little (or big leap) of faith, curiosity, and desire. That something can exist, can BE where before there was nothing. That you have the ability to make it so. That you have the right to even try.
I seriously debated the value of starting a blog as a part of my website. What do I have to say? Why do I feel the need to say it publicly? Who cares? But in the end of it all I am an artist, a creator, a maker at heart...and therefore, perhaps more than a little bit fatally optimistic. I believe thoughts matter, I believe words matter, and I believe engagement matters. And no matter how small the ripple, it will eventually reach a shore.
We are in interesting (to say the least) times. Critical thinking and constructive discourse are imperative. I hope to be a part of that here - to ask big questions and analyze and think critically about what I hear, see, and experience.
But what I am thinking about most right now is:
How do we take responsibility for our present and our future by making our optimism actionable?
In what ways, large and small, can I create my own ripples of change? How can I participate in making other ripples even larger? Yes, critical thinking and constructive discourse are imperative. But we all must find a way, every day, to make it actionable.
And with that...
Welcome to the online home of my thoughts, musings, and creations traversing the world of art, culture, and life. May it all create ripples that matter.
